***President highlights economic gains, party growth, and calls for discipline ahead of 2027 elections
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging party members to remain focused on collective goals while defending his administration’s reform agenda at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention held on Friday in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu described the convention as a defining moment for both the party and Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that unity remains the APC’s greatest strength since its formation in 2013.
He said the theme of the convention, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” underscores the need for cohesion to achieve national development, warning that political parties often fail when personal ambition overrides collective interest.
The president paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari and other deceased party members, noting that their sacrifices laid the foundation for the APC’s growth and national influence.
Tinubu reaffirmed that the APC was not formed merely as a platform for electoral victories but as a vehicle for national transformation, adding that the party remains committed to building a Nigeria where governance is effective, institutions are strong, and citizens enjoy equal opportunities.
He dismissed claims that the ruling party aims to establish a one-party state, emphasizing the importance of a vibrant opposition in strengthening democracy. However, he criticized opposition attacks on the Electoral Act 2026, insisting that the law followed due legislative process and reflects the country’s commitment to credible elections.
On governance, Tinubu said his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is delivering results despite global economic challenges. He cited improvements in infrastructure, including road construction and modernization of ports and airports, alongside fiscal and tax reforms.
According to him, Nigeria’s economy is showing signs of recovery, with declining inflation, improved investor confidence, and sustained trade surpluses. He also highlighted increased foreign investment in the oil and gas sector, a booming stock market, and Nigeria’s exit from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.
The president acknowledged ongoing challenges in the power sector, including debts and outdated infrastructure, but said efforts are underway to address them through initiatives such as the proposed Grid Asset Management Company.
Addressing young people, Tinubu described them as central to the nation’s future and called for greater youth inclusion in leadership and decision-making processes. He also pledged increased opportunities for women within the party and government, noting that empowering women strengthens political institutions.
He urged party delegates and aspirants to conduct themselves with integrity during the convention, stressing that internal contests should not lead to division.
“At the end of this convention, our party must be the victor,” he said.
Tinubu commended members of the convention planning committee, APC governors, and other stakeholders for their roles in organizing the event, describing the party’s recent influx of members from other political parties as a sign of growing public trust.
He charged newly elected party leaders to uphold transparency, strengthen internal democracy, and maintain unity within the APC.
The convention, held at Eagle Square in Abuja, brought together party leaders, delegates, and stakeholders from across the country to elect new national officers and set the direction for the party ahead of future political contests.
