Senate observes a minute silence for victims of Lagos gas explosion

The Senate on Wednesday observed a minute silence for the victims of the gas explosion which occurred at Ladipo area of Mushin local government in Lagos State.

The decision to mourn the victims followed a point of order raised by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Lagos West).

Relying on Order 43 – Personal Explanation – Adeola in a motion, explained the urgent need to investigate the gas explosion which resulted in loss of lives and properties.

He recalled that in the early hours of Tuesday, November 16th, 2021 around 8.30am, a gas explosion occurred at a domestic Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) sale point at 21, Ojekunle Street in the Ladipo Spare Parts Market area in Mushin, Lagos State.

According to him, “the explosion caused no fewer than 5 deaths comprising of three adult male, a woman and a 10-year-old boy who died in the hospital before medical attention could be rendered while 10 people were rescued and treated on the spot for injuries according to emergency agencies that promptly responded to the inferno.

“Informed that the explosion, suspected to have been caused by fire close by gas cylinders at the sale point leading to deaths and destruction of properties including six (6) lock up shops, ten (10) houses, vehicles and motorcycles in the vicinity of the blast at the sale LPG sale point;

“Aware that there has been a recurrence of similar explosions in recent times in the same area in my senatorial district as happened in 2016, 2018 (Abule-Egba), 2019 (Abule – Egba) 2020 (ljegun), and 2020 (lle-Epo, Oke-Odo), 2020(Abule Ado);

“Worried that Nigerians resident in all the densely populated areas where these explosions occurred now live in fear of not only losing properties and investment but their lives or those of loved ones from these frequent explosive fire disasters.”

The lawmaker commended officers and men of NEMA, LASEMA and Lagos State Fire Service for their prompt roles in putting out the inferno resulting from the explosion and mitigating its spread as well as rescuing victims of the explosion.

He also called on the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream and Gas to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the explosion.

Adeola urged the National Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to immediately send relief materials to affected victims and offset medical bills of those hospitalized.

Meanwhile, the Senate also on Wednesday passed three bills for concurrence.

The bills are FCT Area Courts Bill, 2021; Defence Research and Development Bureau Bill, 2021; and Chartered Institute of Treasury Management (Est.) Bill, 2021.

The bills were sponsored by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi.

Supporters and members of the All progressives Congress in Ado Ward 9 has staged a colourful victory walk to the Governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti to celebrate the re-election of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term in office.

 

The jubilant supporters, chanting solidarity songs and waving banners, described the governor’s victory at the poll as a reflection of the confidence reposed in his administration by the people of Ekiti State.

They said the massive electoral support received by Governor Oyebanji was a testament to his people-oriented policies, inclusive style of governance and remarkable developmental strides across the state.

 

The victory walk was led by the Leader of Ward 9, Alhaji Ademola Bello; the Ward Chairman, Mrs. Falilat Korede; and the Ward 9 Councillor, Hon. Mayowa Ogunsakin, alongside party faithful, youths and women from the ward.

 

Speaking during the celebration, the ward leaders congratulated Governor Oyebanji on his resounding victory and expressed appreciation to the people of Ward 9 and the entire state for their support during the election.

They noted that the governor’s first term had brought significant improvements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and workers’ welfare, adding that his re-election would provide the opportunity to consolidate on the achievements already recorded.

 

The leaders also reaffirmed the commitment of Ado Ward 9 to continue supporting the governor’s administration in its efforts to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people of Ekiti State.

The Chairman of the Board of the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority (EKSWAMA), Prince Oladele Adeniyi, alongside other members of the board, has congratulated Governor Biodun Oyebanji on his resounding victory in the 2026 governorship election, describing his re-election as a clear endorsement of his people-oriented policies and remarkable developmental strides across the state.

 

 

 

In a congratulatory message, the board members said the outcome of the election reflects the confidence and trust the people of Ekiti State have in Governor Oyebanji’s leadership, vision, and commitment to the continued progress of the state.

The Ekiti State Head of Service, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi, has congratulated Governor Biodun Oyebanji on his re-election, describing his victory at the polls as a reflection of the people’s confidence in his leadership and achievements.

 

Olomojobi, in a congratulatory statement issued made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti said the governor’s electoral success was not a fluke but a testament to his unwavering commitment to the shared prosperity agenda of his administration.

 

She noted that Oyebanji’s leadership had consistently impacted lives positively and delivered on campaign promises, thereby earning him the trust and support of the people of the state.

 

The Head of Service commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of workers and strengthening the public service, which she described as the engine room for the implementation of government policies and programmes.
