National Gallery of Arts tasks youths on creativity

Mr Ebeten Ivara, the Director-General, National Gallery of Arts (NGA), has urged Nigerian youths to identify and harness their potential through participation in visual and creative arts.

Ivara gave the advice on Thursday at the third edition of the Rainbow Art Unlocking Creativity Programme organised for Primary and Secondary Schools in Abuja.

Theme of the programme was: “A Cultural Perspective on the Impact of COVID-19”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme attracted 47 schools, participating in arts competition, folks tale, cultural exchange, arts making and bead making.

The director-general said that the programme was designed and dedicated to children to harness their inner potential in expressing innate capabilities in visual and creative arts.

“Since culture is our way of life, COVID-19 has actually interfered with our economic, religious and social norms, not only in Nigeria, but the world in general.

“Thus, the need for this year’s theme, A Cultural Perspective on the Impact of COVID-19.

“The theme was chosen to educate and show case the global economy through the eyes of the children.

“And, to also inform citizens to reflect on how the pandemic has impacted and affected cultures and continents on a global level,” he said.

According to him, children cannot be left out in our day-to-day activities as they have greater role to play in finding solution to any problem through their skills.

Also, Mrs Ononugbo Julie, Assistant Chief Education Officer of NGA, said that the programme was designed in seven sessions, including arts competition, folks tale, cultural exchange, arts making, bead making among others.

“During the session, students are allowed to participate in any session of their choice, helping them to acquire skills.

“We have competitions in different branches of arts. At the end of the session, we have winners in different categories – first, second and third position in all the seven sessions.

“Participating students will benefit by going home with a certificate and gift,” she said. (NAN)

FG bans money rituals, other vices in Nollywood movies

The Federal Government has placed a ban on money rituals and glamourizing of vices in Nigerian movies.

The Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr Shaibu Husseini, disclosed this at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood in Enugu on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

Movie producers, directors, and actors drawn from different parts of the country, as well as leaders of various guilds and associations in Nollywood were present at the event.

Husseini said: “We are facing an industry emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians and stakeholders.

“When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on the need to make subsidiary legislation to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies, he saw the need to include money rituals.

“Others included in the regulation are ritual killings and glamourizing other crimes in order to further sanitize the film industry.

“Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004 has approved the regulation.

“The minister has approved the Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion and Glamorization display in Movies, Musical Videos and Skits Regulations 2024.”

“We have also forwarded the approved copy to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette.”

The NFVCB boss added that the sensitization programme was to educate stakeholders on the danger inherent in smoking in Nigerian movies.

According to him, besides the health implications, glamourizing smoking in films poses a negative influence on teens and young adults who constitute the largest segment of Nigerian movie viewers.

He noted that the board was set to undertake detailed enlightenment programmes in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, religious groups, and other institutions.

It is the duty of the NFVCB to register all film and video outlets across the country and to keep a register of such registered outlets among other functions.

Davido, Chioma Welcome Twins

It’s a double blessing for Afrobeat star Davido and his wife Chioma, who have welcomed a set of twins.

The couple, who lost their son Ifeanyi in a tragic accident last year, welcomed twins on Monday.

According to an inside source, the twins arrived at 9pm.

The news was further confirmed by Evangelist Gospel Agochukwu on Tuesday morning.

The cleric uploaded his chat with Davido on the official Facebook page of his church.

According to the chat, Davido confirmed to the cleric that the prophecy he made last year had come to pass.

Agochukwu had in November last year revealed that God told him that Davido and Chioma will welcome twins after the death of Ifeanyi.

Davido and Chioma haven’t announced the arrival on social media, but congratulatory messages have continued to pour.

Ilebaye Crowned BBNaija All Stars Winner

Ilebaye Odiniya is the winner of BBNaija All Stars, the eighth season of the reality television series.

She took the highly coveted top spot at Sunday’s finale, leaving 2019 winner Mercy Eke, 33, in the number two position.

Ilebaye goes home with a cash prize of N120 million, a weekend getaway for two, and an SUV, among other rewards.

The 22-year-old was evicted from 2022’s BBNaija Level Up season after only three weeks.

Cynthia Nwadiora aka CeeC, who was the runner-up of the third season Double Wahala in 2018,  came in at number three behind Ilebaye and Mercy Eke.

Adekunle Olopade, 28, was revealed by host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu as the third runner-up on Sunday.

Pere Egbi, 38, and Cross Okonkwo, 33, were named the fourth and fifth runners-up, respectively.
