Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has been summoned by an Abuja Magistrate Court over alleged multi-million naira tax evasion spanning five years.
The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) accused Melaye of failing to pay his Personal Income Tax for 2023 and 2024, in addition to underpaying in previous years despite declaring far higher earnings.
A criminal summons dated August 21, 2025, directed Melaye to appear before the Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse Zone II, Abuja, on September 5, 2025.
According to court filings, Melaye paid ₦85,000.08 in 2019, ₦100,000.08 in 2020, ₦120,000 in 2021, and ₦1,000,000 in 2022 — amounts deemed grossly inadequate compared to his declared incomes. In 2022 alone, he reportedly declared an income of over ₦6.5 million, yet paid only ₦1 million in tax.
The FCT-IRS revealed that an administrative assessment was first issued on May 23, 2025, for the 2023 and 2024 tax years. After Melaye allegedly ignored the notice, a Best of Judgment Assessment was issued on June 23, placing his liabilities at ₦234,896,000 (2023) and ₦274,712,000 (2024) — a combined total of over ₦509 million.
In a strongly worded notice, the Service declared:
“Despite reminders and ample time provided, your non-compliance with Section 41 of the Personal Income Tax Act constitutes a breach of your obligations. Consequently, FCT-IRS has, in accordance with Section 54(3), proceeded to raise a Best of Judgment Assessment in respect of your tax liabilities.”
The Service further noted discrepancies in the ex-lawmaker’s tax history for 2020–2022 and signaled fresh additional assessments to follow.
Melaye has been informed of his right to object to the assessment within 30 days, failing which the judgment will be deemed final and recovery proceedings initiated.
As the September 5 court date looms, all eyes will be on whether the flamboyant former senator can mount a legal defense against the staggering claims or face a damning judgment from the court.
