The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development says the 6th National Youth Games will hold between Oct. 10 and 19 at the University of Ilorin Sports Complex.

The Acting Director, Grassroots Sports Development at the ministry,  Bode Durotoye, confirmed this in Ilorin on Thursday after inspecting some facilities for the games.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 32 Directors of Sports across the country are in Ilorin for the technical meeting of the games.

Durotoye, who was impressed with the facilities on ground, commended the authority of the institution for adding to what was on ground before now.

“We are very pleased, everybody has commended the effort of the University for maintaining the facilities even better than the last edition” he said.

He said the ministry was ready to put together other games after COVID-19 pandemic prevented the 2020 edition from holding.

Durotoye described the games as a production centre where federations source for athletes to replace the aging ones.

“Some athletes discovered during previous editions of the Youth Games are on their way to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games in Japan.

“We don’t have any reason not to continue the games,” Durotoye added.

He said that the hosting of the games was a matter of interest and that anyone interested should come and study the facilities at the University of Ilorin and provide the ones that are better off.

Speaking on behalf of the university, the Director of Sports,  Olufunmilola Dominic, said the school was fully ready to host the games since 2020 before COVID-19 disrupted the plans.

She explained that the institution had done some repairs on some of the facilities and even provided more where necessary.

“If you say you want to start tomorrow, we are ready, all we need to do is to just do some clearances and the game goes on.

“We have the equipment, even they want to borrow, they can borrow from us, so, we are ever ready,” she said.

She said that the students would be on first semester holiday when the games would commence.

NAN recalls that Delta emerged champions of the 5th edition of the games with 41 gold, 32 silver and 31 bronze medals making it the 5th time the team won the fiesta.

Team Lagos, who made their second appearance at the edition after debuting in 2018, finished second with 22 gold, 36 silver and 14 bronze medals.

The third position was claimed by Team Bayelsa with 17 gold, 6 silver and 22 bronze medals. (NAN)

Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup final after producing a thrilling late comeback to defeat England 2-1 in a dramatic semi-final played on Wednesday in Atlanta.

The reigning South American champions showed remarkable resilience to overturn a second-half deficit, with goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez cancelling out Anthony Gordon’s opener for England. The victory sends Argentina into their second consecutive World Cup final, where they will face Spain in a highly anticipated showdown for the title.

After a closely contested first half ended goalless, England made the breakthrough shortly after the restart. Anthony Gordon calmly finished from a well-delivered cross by Morgan Rogers to give the Three Lions a deserved 1-0 lead and raise hopes of a first World Cup final appearance in decades.

Argentina, however, responded with determination and dominated much of the remainder of the contest. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was called into action repeatedly, producing a series of impressive saves to deny the South Americans as they piled on the pressure.

The breakthrough eventually came when Enzo Fernández unleashed a superb long-range effort that beat Pickford to restore parity, sparking renewed belief among the Argentine players and supporters.

With the match seemingly heading for extra time, Argentina delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time. Lionel Messi produced a trademark pinpoint delivery into the penalty area, where Lautaro Martínez rose highest to head home the winning goal in the 92nd minute.

England manager Thomas Tuchel introduced defensive reinforcements in an attempt to preserve the draw, but Argentina’s relentless attacking pressure ultimately proved too much for the Three Lions.

The victory keeps Argentina’s dream of lifting another World Cup trophy alive, while England’s campaign ends in heartbreaking fashion despite an impressive tournament run.

Argentina will now take on Spain in the World Cup final, with both football giants aiming to crown their outstanding campaigns with the sport’s biggest prize.

France secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Morocco 2-0 in their quarter-final clash at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

Second-half goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé sealed victory for Didier Deschamps’ side, ending Morocco’s impressive World Cup campaign and keeping France on course for a third FIFA World Cup title.

After a tightly contested first half that ended goalless, France finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute through Mbappé. The Real Madrid forward, who had earlier missed a first-half penalty after his weak effort was saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, redeemed himself with a brilliant curling strike from the edge of the box to put Les Bleus ahead.

The goal was Mbappé’s eighth of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

France doubled their advantage just six minutes later when Mbappé turned provider. His perfectly weighted pass released Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, who calmly slotted a low finish beyond Bounou to make it 2-0 and effectively end Morocco’s hopes of a comeback.

Mbappé was later substituted with an ice pack on his right ankle, although there was no immediate indication of a serious injury.

Morocco, backed by strong support inside the 63,811-capacity stadium, fought bravely but struggled to create clear-cut chances, particularly in the absence of injured forward Ismael Saibari. The Atlas Lions were unable to break down a disciplined French defence, which recorded its third consecutive clean sheet in the knockout stage.

Earlier in the match, Mbappé had won a penalty in the 25th minute after being brought down by Noussair Mazraoui during a swift counterattack. Although the decision was briefly reviewed for a possible foul on Moroccan captain Achraf Hakimi in the build-up, the penalty stood. However, Bounou guessed correctly to deny the French captain from the spot.

The Moroccan goalkeeper produced several impressive saves throughout the first half, including a fine stop to deny Désiré Doué, while Lucas Digne also struck the top of the crossbar as France piled on the pressure.

Mbappé’s decisive goal also saw him reach 64 international goals in 104 appearances for France, further strengthening his status as the country’s all-time leading scorer. He has now scored 20 goals in 20 FIFA World Cup appearances, leaving him just one goal behind Lionel Messi’s tournament record of 21.

For Morocco, despite the disappointment of elimination, the tournament showcased another talented generation, including midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, as the North African nation continues preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

France, champions in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, will now face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals in Dallas as they bid to reach a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final before long-serving head coach Didier Deschamps steps down after the tournament.

Morocco boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland, while Brazil returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 triumph over Haiti in Group C matches played on Friday.

The Atlas Lions secured all three points thanks to an early goal from Ismael Saibari at the Boston Stadium.

The PSV Eindhoven midfielder stunned Scotland just 72 seconds after kickoff, scoring the fastest goal of the tournament so far. The move began when Morocco captain Brahim Díaz collected the ball on the right flank and delivered a perfectly weighted pass behind the Scottish defence.

Saibari timed his run brilliantly before firing a powerful right-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Angus Gunn to give Morocco an early lead.

Despite Scotland enjoying periods of possession and pushing for an equaliser, Steve Clarke’s side struggled to create clear-cut chances. Morocco remained organised defensively and held firm throughout the match to secure a vital victory.

The result significantly improves Morocco’s chances of advancing from Group C, while Scotland now face a difficult task in their remaining fixtures as they seek to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

In the group’s other encounter, five-time world champions Brazil produced an impressive display to defeat Haiti 3-0.

Brazil entered the match under pressure after being held to a draw by Morocco in their opening game, but the South Americans responded in dominant fashion.

Striker Matheus Cunha was the star of the evening, scoring twice to lead the Selecao to victory. The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward opened the scoring before adding his second goal later in the contest.

Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior also got on the scoresheet, netting shortly before halftime to give Brazil a comfortable advantage heading into the break.

Brazil controlled the game from start to finish, creating numerous chances and limiting Haiti’s opportunities as Carlo Ancelotti’s side secured their first win of the tournament.

The victory puts Brazil firmly back in contention for a place in the knockout rounds, while Haiti, making their World Cup debut, face an uphill battle after suffering their second defeat of the competition.

With two rounds of matches completed, Group C remains finely balanced, with Morocco and Brazil strengthening their positions ahead of the decisive final group-stage fixtures.
