TORTURE OF SUSPECTS: DSS Debunks Claims by Sahara Reporters Says Agency acts in accordance with the Law
The Department of State Services DSS has described as untrue the claims by a Sahara Reporters and online News Medium that the Service tortures suspects to extract confessions and other vital information whenever the Nigeria Secret Police make an arrest.
Reacting to the publication in Abuja in a statement the Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunayan said ” There is no iota of truth in the so called exclusive. The DSS does not force out confessions from suspects and has not done so in the matter of IPOB and ESN.”
” The Service is a professional agency that follows the rules of engagement and standards operating procedures in all of its activities. It does not take laws into its hands. It is a public knowledge that it has by today, charged many suspects to court in line with democratic norms. The entire reportage is a figment of the imagination of the news medium.”
Dr. Afunanya stated that the aim is to simply Malign the Service and bring it to disrepute, adding that ” by now, everyone should have been aware of the brand of guerilla journalism practised by this particular outfit.”
Dr. Peter Afunanya concluded that The public should ignore the report in it’s entirely seeing it as the handiwork of mischief makers.
It will be recalled that the Sahara Reporters in a publication in it’s Website on Sunday 28 November 2021 titled “Exclusive: Department of State Services’ Officer Samson Enweruzo Unveiled As Notorious For Forcing False Confession out of IPOB suspects, Involvement in illegal Raids, Arrests, Extra Judicial Killings in the South-East” alleged that one Samson Enweruzo an operative of the Department of State Services DSS was behind most of what the US based Medium described as extra Judicial Killings of IPOB and ESN members in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria.
APPEAL COURT UPHOLDS GOVERNORSHIP OF SEN. ADEMOLA ADELEKE OF OSUN STATE.
The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on Friday set aside the judgement of the Osun State Election Petition Tribunal that annulled the victory of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party during the July 16, 2022, Osun State governorship election.
However, in a unanimous agreement by a three man panel led by justice Mohammed Shuaibu, the Court of Appeal quashed the tribunal’s judgement and gave its verdict to uphold Adeleke as rightful governor of Osun State.
The tribunal had annulled Adeleke’s victory and affirmed Gboyega Oyetola of All Progressives Congress as the authentic winner of the poll.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission had returned Adeleke as the winner of the poll.
INEC said Adeleke polled 403,371 votes to defeat then-incumbent Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the APC, who got 375,027 votes
But Oyetola and the APC rejected the result of the poll and headed for the tribunal.
In its January 27, 2023 majority verdict, the Justice Tertse Kume-led tribunal annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Oyetola the winner of the poll.
However, a minority judgment by Justice B. Ogbuli affirmed Adeleke as the winner of the poll.
Displeased, Adeleke and the PDP headed for the Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal heard the appeal on March 13 and reserved its judgment.
WE ARE AWARE OF PLANS TO SMEAR THE NAME OF OUR DG AND KEY OFFICIALS OF THE SERVICE – DSS SAYS.
The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday said the service has uncovered plans by some politicians and disgruntled elements within and outside the government to sponsor smear campaigns against the DGSS, Yusuf Magaji Bichi and his key officials over the Service’s uncompromising stance on some critical governance and policy issues.
Public Relations Officer of the service, Peter Afunanya in a statement says, those behind the plot have engaged Civil Society and Non-Governmental Organisations to not only sustain but stage further rallies, road-shows and press conferences and use the occasions to discredit Bichi.
The statement further added that sections of the media have been briefed to implement the strategy through sponsored articles, commentaries and features to malign the DG, his family and select officials of the Service.
” The Service is monitoring developments and will allow the plotters to either exhaust themselves or rescind the plan of action. Otherwise, no amount of intimidation, harassment and blackmail will deter it from discharging its duties. However, it would not idly watch a group of dissatisfied gang to undermine the Service and its highly dedicated Leadership and Management.” Afunanya stated.
The DSS, therefore, wishes to inform the public to be wary of these tendencies and ignore the antics of dark forces out to impugn the character of the DG. It restates its unalloyed support to the President on his resolve to continue to confront head-on, threats to national security as well as create the enabling environment necessary for the 2023 general elections to hold.
