He said the health management system, as designed, was not created to take care of the poor “and this necessitates privileged persons in the government to lend a helping hand.”
“The health management system was not created to take care of the poor. So, privileged persons like me in the government should lend their helping hands so that the poor can also be accommodated,” Ifon added.
He said the intervention was meant to complement the health care reforms of Governor Udom Emmanuel and enhance eye care services in and around the federal constituency, which comprised Eket, Esit Eket, Ibeno and Onna local governments.
Ifon urged the hospital management to ensure the equipment was used for the advancement of eye care services.
He donated N1 million in partnership with the hospital for free surgery for financially-challenged persons.
Health Commissioner Prof. Augustine Umoh, joining the hospital management to receive the equipment, lauded Ifon for the noble gesture.
He said the government alone could not handle all aspects of health, adding that individuals and foundations should also contribute to remedy some aspects of health.
