The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will no longer recognise or engage with either faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark or Rafiu Bala, following a review of a recent court ruling.
In a statement issued by the commission’s Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Kudu, INEC said it would cease accepting correspondences from both groups and suspend monitoring of their meetings, congresses, and conventions pending the final determination of the matter before the Federal High Court.
The commission also disclosed that it would remove David Mark’s name from its official portal as part of efforts to maintain neutrality.
The decision comes after the Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, on March 12, 2026, dismissed an appeal filed by Mark challenging an earlier directive in an ongoing leadership dispute within the party.
The crisis stems from a legal challenge initiated by Rafiu Bala, a former ADC vice chairman, who opposed the emergence of Mark and his allies as members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). Bala argued that he should have assumed leadership following the resignation of former national chairman Ralph Nwosu.
The dispute intensified after Nwosu handed over party leadership to Mark, a former Senate President, and Rauf Aregbesola, who were named interim national chairman and national secretary, respectively, in 2025.
INEC stated that its current position is to maintain the status quo ante bellum — reflecting the party’s structure before September 2, 2025, when the suit was filed — until the courts deliver a final judgment on the leadership tussle.
