The Chairman, FCT Golf Association, Akabom Enebong, has said that involving decision-makers was a critical step in the development of golf game accross the FCT

Akabom reiterated this fact when he hosted the Head of Service, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nancy Nathan, to her first golf training in Abuja.

The training took place at the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja, as part of efforts to promote women’s participation and grassroots development of golf.

Enebong told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that involving decision-makers was critical to expanding the game across the FCT.

“To promote any sport successfully, you must involve decision-makers so they appreciate its value and support its development,” he said.

He also said that the association deliberately targeted women because of the enormous opportunities available through sports participation.

“Women are underrepresented in sports in spite of available opportunities. About 80 to 90 per cent of sports scholarships for women in Nigeria remain untapped,” he said.

According to him, encouraging more women to embrace golf will improve participation, health, leadership and access to educational opportunities.

Enebong added that the association was also prioritising grassroots development through a Golf STEM academy for schools across the FCT.

“We want to integrate golf with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education because the game involves physics, calculations, and technical skills,” he said.

He explained that combining sports with education would make sponsorship more attractive and improve learning outcomes for children.

“Our vision is to raise a new generation of young golfers who will excel both academically and on the course,” he added.

Enebong appealed to corporate organisations and development partners to support the initiative through sponsorship and youth development programmes.

The FCTA HoS, Nathan, said she accepted the invitation after learning more about the health and recreational benefits of golf.

“I have heard so much about golf. The chairman also encouraged me to give it a try because it is a game one can enjoy even at an older age,” she said.

She described her first training session as exciting and physically rewarding.

“I can already feel the impact around my ribs and legs. It shows the game keeps the body active and fit,” she added.

Nathan urged more women in the FCT to embrace golf, describing it as a sport suitable for everyone regardless of age or background.

She commended the FCT Golf Association for changing public perception that golf was only for the wealthy.

She appreciated Enebong’s commitment to grassroots development and women inclusion in the sport.

She pledged to support initiatives that would encourage more women and young people to participate in golf across the FCT.

“I will continue to advocate programmes that promote healthy lifestyles, youth development, and women’s participation through sports,” she said.

Fédération Internationale de Football Association, FIFA’s has suspended the proposed plan to sell private stakes in upcoming World Cup tournaments.

This is contained in a statement by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Friday, saying thay the proposal that sparked backlash from fans and soccer associations around the world has been scrapped,

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” Infantino said. “Our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve.

“As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”, he said

FIFA and Infantino had announced plans Tuesday to set up a separate subsidiary – involving private equity investment – that would control the commercial and operational rights to one of the globe’s biggest sporting events.

The proposal had since come under intense scrutiny and criticism from many around the world, with UEFA saying the “soul and governance” of the game are under threat. FIFA, though, said that the money generated will be reinvested back into the sport.

Infantino said it is now his goal to reunite the world of football following this debacle.

Nigeria enjoyed another successful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Goodness Nwachukwu set a new world record to win gold, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed a historic shot put title, and Tobi Amusan earned a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Nwachukwu successfully defended her women’s F42 discus throw title with a world-record throw of 39.66 metres on her final attempt. The 27-year-old surpassed her previous world record by more than three metres to win another Commonwealth gold for Nigeria.

In the men’s shot put, Enekwechi made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the event. The African record holder threw 21.07 metres to edge defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who finished with 21.03 metres, while England’s Scott Lincoln took bronze with 20.99 metres.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, world record holder Tobi Amusan battled through a knee injury to finish third in 12.60 seconds, claiming her third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal. Although she missed out on a third straight Commonwealth title, Amusan’s determination ensured another podium finish for Team Nigeria.

The trio’s performances added more medals and history to Nigeria’s athletics campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
