The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called on Nigerians to acquire combat skills for self-defence, describing them as essential survival tools in today’s world.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Musa likened martial arts such as Karate, Taekwondo, and Judo to driving and swimming, stressing that they should be considered vital life skills.
“That one should be taken as learning driving, learning how to swim. Whether we have war or not, it is a survival instinct,” he said, adding that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should incorporate unarmed combat into its orientation programme.
According to him, security is the responsibility of every Nigerian, and citizens must remain situationally aware to detect suspicious movements and individuals.
On terrorism financing, the defence chief revealed that terrorist groups are increasingly relying on gold transactions, often involving complex international networks, to fund their operations. He noted that the government is working to track such financial flows despite legal and logistical hurdles.
Musa also admitted that poor road networks, difficult terrains, and lack of communication infrastructure hamper military response to terror attacks. He explained that insurgents often strike and flee within minutes due to easier mobility, while troops face threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the North-East.
The CDS further said that the arrest of pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa in Finland in November 2024 has brought relative peace to the South-East, with ongoing operations to apprehend his associates across the region.
On the war against terror groups, Musa described the recent arrest of Ansaru commanders as a significant breakthrough, attributing the success to synergy among the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force. He disclosed that the Defence Headquarters will host an African Chiefs of Defence Staff conference from Monday to strengthen continental collaboration in tackling insecurity.
