Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his position to pursue his ambition of becoming the next governor of Bauchi State.
The development was confirmed on Monday in a brief statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said, “The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.”
Tuggar’s exit follows earlier indications that some members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet were expected to step down to contest elective offices ahead of upcoming political cycles.
His Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had previously disclosed the minister’s intention to run for the governorship seat, stating that Tuggar would comply with the timetable and guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State,” Abdulkadir said earlier.
Tuggar, a native of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, had previously contested for the position. His resignation is seen as a formal step toward re-entering the state’s governorship race.
