Shadawanka Village, a quiet settlement on the outskirts of Bauchi, was thrown into shock on Monday after police uncovered a disturbing case of prolonged confinement that had allegedly lasted nearly two decades.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 72-year-old Malam Muhammad Lawan for allegedly chaining his 40-year-old son for 17 years in what authorities described as inhumane treatment.
The case came to light on February 16, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m., following a distress call from concerned members of the community. Residents had reportedly grown uneasy over the condition of the victim, whose prolonged isolation had remained largely hidden from public scrutiny.
Acting swiftly on the report, the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division mobilised officers, alongside operatives of the Police Response and Special Patrol Unit (PRESPOL), to the scene. What they discovered stunned even seasoned officers.
The victim was found restrained by a heavy chain fastened to his right leg. According to police sources, the man appeared frail and in urgent need of medical attention after years of alleged confinement under harsh conditions.
He was immediately rescued and transported to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where medical personnel commenced urgent treatment and evaluation. Hospital officials have yet to release full details of his medical condition, but sources indicate that both physical and psychological assessments are ongoing.
Neighbours described the situation as tragic and difficult to comprehend. Some residents claimed they had suspected something was wrong but had limited access to the family compound. Others expressed regret that the alleged abuse had gone undetected for so long.
Police spokespersons assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the prolonged confinement. Authorities are also expected to assess whether other individuals may have been aware of, or complicit in, the alleged abuse.
“The command will not tolerate any form of inhumane treatment,” a senior officer stated, adding that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The incident has sparked renewed conversations about mental health awareness, family responsibility, and community vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.
As investigations continue, residents of Shadawanka Village are left grappling with the sobering reality that a man lived in chains among them for 17 years — unseen, unheard, and waiting for help.
