The House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security has disclosed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly complex.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Garba Muhammad, made this known on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate for the National Assembly. The proposed directorate would define the qualifications and conditions of service for the Sergeant-at-Arms and other security personnel.
Muhammad said the parliament faces several security challenges due to the daily influx of people, including lawmakers, staff, members of the executive and judiciary, as well as protesters and visitors.
“The National Assembly is going through a lot of security challenges. We have experienced car thefts, motorcycle thefts, vandalism, fake identity cards, and unwanted visitors accessing the premises without proper documentation. We have also received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” he stated.
He added that some legislators have faced threats from constituents and individuals who gain access to their offices without formal appointments.
Muhammad warned that if the current security lapses are not addressed, legislative activities could be disrupted, affecting representation, oversight, budget processes, and plenary sessions.
“Effective security management requires a comprehensive approach to ensure the legislative process functions effectively and maximally,” he said.
The committee chairman stressed the need to adopt global best practices in parliamentary security and urged state houses of assembly to implement similar measures.
