Fresh crisis is brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as state chairmen, former governors, National Assembly members, and other top stakeholders from the South have disowned a controversial zoning meeting scheduled to hold in Lagos on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

The PDP heavyweights branded the meeting “illegal, selfish, and exclusionary”, warning that any resolutions, communiqués, or outcomes from it “cannot and shall not assume the authority of consensus.”

In a hard-hitting statement signed by key party leaders — including Austin Nwachukwu (Imo), Abraham Amah (Abia), Venatuis Ikem (Cross River), Aniekan Akpan (Akwa Ibom), Aaron Chukwuemeka (Rivers), National Vice Chairman (South-East) Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck, and Minority Leader of the House of Representatives O. K. Chinda — the leaders accused the conveners of the Lagos summit of pursuing narrow political ambitions at the expense of party unity.

They blasted the organizers for deliberately sidelining state chairmen, elected national officers, principal lawmakers, and even former governors from the South-East and South-South, describing the move as a brazen disregard for party structures.

“Such a meeting, convened in secrecy and exclusion, is not only illegal but dangerous to the unity and stability of the PDP. Decisions reached in such a manner cannot represent the collective will of Southern Nigeria,” the statement thundered.

The leaders further alleged that the Lagos “summit” was premature and tailored to protect the selfish ambitions of a select few, stressing that the official Zoning Committee set up by the party’s NEC was yet to submit its report.

Calling for calm, the PDP chieftains urged the National Working Committee (NWC), the NEC, and all stakeholders to ignore any outcome from the Lagos gathering, warning that it risks sowing division in the South.

They reaffirmed that the South-East, South-South, and South-West remain united in their quest for fairness, justice, and equity, insisting the future of the PDP cannot be dictated by “clandestine maneuvers and exclusionary tactics.”

In a dramatic twist that could reshape Nasarawa politics, Senator Ahmed Wadada, representing Nasarawa West, has resigned from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing deepening internal crises and endless litigations tearing the party apart.

Wadada, who announced his resignation in a Thursday letter and addressed to the Tudun Ward Chairman of SDP in Keffi LGA, said his decision was “painful but necessary.”

“This decision has not been taken lightly. I feel compelled to resign due to the lingering internal crisis that has plagued our party for some time,” he declared.

The senator lamented the divisions within SDP, stressing that the turmoil had weakened its relevance. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities he enjoyed while at the party, but insisted that the “dynamism of life” demands a new political direction.

Tinubu Factor? Wadada Hints at Political Realignment

Wadada’s resignation comes just weeks after he openly praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, dismissing suggestions that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could produce a leader capable of surpassing Tinubu’s achievements.

His remarks fuel speculation that the senator may be warming up to return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) — a party he once belonged to after serving as a national officer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While insisting his exit was not triggered by personal disputes, Wadada dropped a major hint:

“I feel it is time for me to move on and explore new avenues.”

What Next for Wadada?

With SDP in turmoil and his resignation now official, all eyes are on the influential Nasarawa senator.

Will he stage a comeback to the APC or test the waters with another political platform ahead of 2027?

Newsblast can authoritatively report that Senator Wadada is also eyeing the Government House in Lafia, as the executive Governor.

With less than a year to the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, aspirants have begun purchasing nomination and expression of interest forms at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat in Abuja.

One of the aspirants, social media activist and politician, Mrs. Abimbola Olawumi, on Wednesday said her decision to contest was driven by dissatisfaction with the state’s poor infrastructure despite huge federal allocations.

Olawumi told journalists after picking her forms that Ekiti had received over ₦500 billion from the Federal Government in the last three years without visible development to show for it.

“The state of our roads, schools, hospitals, all the infrastructures in Ekiti, there is nothing to write home about. Despite the fact that the president has done so much, especially since 2023, the allocation coming to my state has tripled,” she said.

She also cited a ₦50 billion federal food security fund, which she said should have boosted agriculture in the state but had produced no tangible results.

According to her, skills acquisition and empowerment programmes remain the most effective solutions to tackling poverty and unemployment in the state.
