๐€๐”๐“๐‡๐Ž๐‘โ€™๐’ ๐๐Ž๐“๐„: This article is part of my continuing investigative examination of nearly six decades of Nigerian football leadership. It asks whether former footballers, who have rarely been entrusted with leadership at the top of the NFF, including its presidency, are being judged by the same standards applied to the non-footballers who have historically administered the federation.

From the 1970s to 2026, Nigerian football has largely been led by military officers, government appointees, businessmen, bureaucrats and career administrators. Former internationals have served on boards and technical structures, but not with sustained control of the federationโ€™s presidency.

Nigeria became African champions, reached World Cups and won Olympic gold.

But success does not cancel accountability.

Across generations, familiar problems have returned: unstable technical direction, poor preparation, questionable appointments, unpaid obligations, weak development pathways, financial controversies and failures of accountability.

Consider the road to the 2026 World Cup.

Josรฉ Peseiro began the campaign. Finidi George succeeded him in April 2024 but lasted only weeks. In August, the NFF announced Bruno Labbadia, only for the appointment to collapse within days over unresolved tax terms. Augustine Eguavoen stepped in temporarily before ร‰ric Chelle was appointed in January 2025.

No single coaching change can be blamed for Nigeria missing the World Cup.

But repeated changes, collapsed appointments and uncertainty over technical leadership are governance decisions.

Nigeria must also ask whether indigenous coaches receive the same institutional respect as expatriates.

A Nigerian coach deserves no special favour. If he fails, hold him accountable.

But the Super Eagles job should carry clear standards regardless of nationality: proper contracts, competitive compensation, technical authority, appropriate support and transparent expectations.

If an expatriate can be paid in dollars, a Nigerian in the same position should not automatically be treated differently.

A head coach should also have meaningful authority to choose assistants and players. Administrators should not impose assistants, interfere with selections or introduce academy interests into technical decisions, then hold the coach solely responsible.

Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON title, described contractual terms offered by the NFF in 2015 as a โ€œslave contract.โ€

That deserves separate examination.

Therefore, core contractual benefits, professional support and agreed currency of compensation should apply consistently, regardless of whether the coach is Nigerian or expatriate.

Leadership does not begin after an election.

Under the previous NFF Congress structure, the 36 State Football Associations and the FCT controlled 37 of 44 votes โ€” 84.1 percent of the electorate.

The March 2026 reforms expanded the electorate to 54 votes, reducing the State FA/FCT share to 68.5 percent.

That was progress.

But State FAs and the FCT still hold 37 votes, compared with 17 for every other constituency combined.

State FAs are essential to football development.

The question is whether any single constituency should possess more than two-thirds of the electoral power used to select Nigerian football leadership.

On April 19, 2022, former Nigeria captain and coach Christian Chukwu criticised the neglect of home-based players and called for stronger NPFL pathways into the Super Eagles.

Stephen Keshi had confronted the same issue years earlier.

On December 19, 2011, Keshi said home-based players would form the โ€œbedrockโ€ of his rebuilding programme.

He acted on it.

Six home-based players were part of Nigeriaโ€™s 2013 AFCON squad, with Godfrey Oboabona becoming an important defender and Sunday Mba scoring the winning goal in the final.

Yet on August 23, 2013, reports said the NFF Technical Committee rejected a 42-player camp list containing 24 home-based players and required Keshi to reduce it.

They must earn it.

But they must first be given a credible opportunity to compete.

If Nigeria continually looks abroad for virtually every senior international while its domestic league struggles to produce visible pathways, leadership must examine the development structure it has built.

Fanny Amunโ€™s 2026 fact-finding exercise examined administrative, technical, financial, organisational and developmental problems affecting Nigerian football.

Accountability also goes beyond welfare.

In 2009, $236,000 was reported missing from a safe at the football federationโ€™s secretariat, resulting in investigation and legal proceedings.

The issue today is not assigning guilt retrospectively.

Former footballers often acknowledge:

Correct.

But being a lawyer, businessman, politician, accountant, journalist, civil servant or career administrator does not automatically make someone a good football leader either.

Leadership must be measured by competence, integrity, preparation, vision, accountability and results.

How can an entire group be declared incapable of succeeding when it has never been given a meaningful opportunity to build a leadership record at the very top of the NFF, including its presidency?

Nigeria has produced generations of former footballers with university education, advanced degrees, business experience, coaching credentials and leadership experience inside and outside sport.

Some would fail. Some would succeed.

That is true of every profession.

Set transparent standards. Allow qualified people to compete. Then judge the individual.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโ€™s football reform directive creates an opportunity to examine nearly six decades of historyโ€”not to claim footballers automatically have the answers, but to learn from the record.

It should also be:

And after nearly six decades of different administrators and familiar problems:

As Nigerian football enters another period of restructuring, qualified former footballers should be given a meaningful opportunity to contribute to that answer.

They understand competitive sport from the inside. They understand many of the pressures, sacrifices and vulnerabilities experienced by those who compete.

That perspective matters.

But representation must also come with responsibility: footballers must organise, speak collectively and help build structures that protect the rights, welfare and dignity of current and future players.

Because one principle should never be negotiable:

In familiar Nigerian Pidgin:

๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐ค๐ž๐ฒ ๐๐ž๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค, ๐›๐š๐›๐จ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ž๐ฒ ๐œ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ.

The expression describes a situation in which one person does the hard work while another enjoys the benefits.

Too often, that has reflected an uncomfortable reality in Nigerian football.

Every weekend, Nigerians enjoy the major European leagues, where players are represented through organised structures and have a meaningful voice in matters affecting their profession. Those systems are not perfect, but players generally operate within stronger contractual, welfare and representative frameworks.

Then consider the contrast at home.

Nigerian players, coaches and other football professionals produce the sporting value at club and national-team level, yet many have repeatedly had to struggle for salaries, bonuses, contractual obligations and basic professional treatment.

So while we enjoy the product of European football, we should also study the structures behind it.

Lionel Messi Retires From International Football at 39

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 20-year career with the Argentina national team to an emotional end.

The 39-year-old made the announcement on Monday through a heartfelt post on Instagram, saying the decision was painful but that he believed the time had come to step away from the national team.

Messiโ€™s final appearance for Argentina came in last monthโ€™s 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain. The defeat denied the eight-time Ballon dโ€™Or winner a fairytale ending to his international career, although his place in Argentine football history was already secure.

The decision ends a remarkable international journey that began with Messiโ€™s senior debut in 2005.

During his time with Argentina, Messi made a national-record 207 appearances and scored 125 goals, becoming the countryโ€™s all-time leading scorer and appearance holder.

Messiโ€™s relationship with the Argentina national team was not always a fairytale.

He suffered painful defeats in major finals, including the 2014 World Cup final against Germany and the 2015 and 2016 Copa Amรฉrica finals.

After Argentinaโ€™s 2016 Copa Amรฉrica final defeat, Messi briefly announced his international retirement before returning to the national team.

His comeback eventually produced the greatest chapter of his international career.

In 2021, Messi finally won his first major senior international trophy when Argentina defeated Brazil in the Copa Amรฉrica final.

A year later, he reached the pinnacle of the sport.

Messi captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, defeating France on penalties in one of the most memorable finals in World Cup history. He was named the tournamentโ€™s best player.

Argentina then won another Copa Amรฉrica title in 2024, further cementing Messiโ€™s status as one of the greatest players in international football.

In his retirement message, Messi said he had always given everything he had to Argentina and wanted to make supporters proud.

He also pointed to the emergence of younger Argentine players who deserve opportunities with the national team.

The announcement came weeks after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who died in August at the age of 68. Reports say the loss contributed to Messiโ€™s decision to reconsider his future in football.

Messi had also reportedly been reflecting on his future following Argentinaโ€™s defeat by Spain in the World Cup final.

Despite stepping away from international football, Messi is not retiring from football altogether. He remains a player for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, with his club career continuing.

Messi leaves Argentina as a World Cup winner, two-time Copa Amรฉrica champion, record goalscorer and record appearance holder.

More importantly, he leaves as the player who finally delivered the World Cup that an entire generation of Argentines had waited decades to see.

His international career began with uncertainty and disappointment but ended with the biggest prizes in world football.

After more than two decades in Argentinaโ€™s famous blue-and-white shirt, one of footballโ€™s greatest international stories has finally reached its final chapter.

Nigeria Dumps Nike, Strikes $8.5m Kit Deal With Adidas

Nigeria has agreed an $8.5m-a-year equipment deal that the Nigeria Football Federation says is the biggest in African football. The deal will also end its 11-year association with Nike and return to adidas.

Former NFF president, Ibrahim Gusau, who resigned along with the federationโ€™s executive committee on Thursday, disclosed the agreement at a news conference in Abuja, saying adidas will pay the federation $4.5m annually in cash and provide another $4m worth of equipment for Nigeriaโ€™s national teams.

The NFF will also receive a 20 per cent royalty on merchandise sales, a clause that could push the value of the agreement well beyond the guaranteed $8.5m annual figure.

Gusau said the contract has already been signed, though it was originally scheduled to be announced in September. He said:

โ€œIt is about the highest kit sponsorship in Africa. No other country in Africa has that kind of sponsorship.

โ€œAdidas will pay Nigeria $4.5 million every year in cash and then they will provide kit worth $4 million every year.โ€

The package becomes the largest kit-supply agreement for an African national football federation, if beating Moroccoโ€™s deal with Puma, reportedly valued at $1.7m, previously the highest publicly known figure on the continent.

Nigeriaโ€™s outgoing Nike contract signed since 2015, had become grossly inadequate for the federationโ€™s needs argued Gusau:

โ€œAs (former) president, I cannot gift someone a jersey because we met a contract that has been running for 11 years on the same terms worth $500,000 in cash and $1 million in kit supply. $500,000 in 2015 and still $500,000 in 2026. It is like you have nothing.”

Nigeria was to first sign with Nike in April 2015 due to its earlier adidas deal being cancelled over breaches during the 2014 World Cup.

Gusau said the limitations of the Nike arrangement had proven so inadequate that the federation had resorted to buying additional kits for its teams, including Nigeriaโ€™s U-20 womenโ€™s team for the World Cup in Poland.

โ€œWe have to buy jerseys for the girls that travelled to Poland because $1 million worth of equipment cannot even service Super Eagles qualifiers for World Cup and Nations Cup as well as Super Falcons,โ€ he said.

Due to the insufficiency, the federation began pushing Nike for improved terms in 2024 but could not reach an agreement, prompting it to solicit competing offers, with Nike retaining a contractual right to match the best proposal. Gusau added:

โ€œFinally, they agreed that we could negotiate with others. At the end of the day we contacted adidas and other kit sponsors and we were able to secure a substantial agreement with adidas. Nike has to match whatever we were offered. They were unable to match the offer from adidas and that is why we are moving on.โ€

Adidas previously supplied Nigeriaโ€™s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations kits and its first World Cup appearance that same year, and again from 2004 to 2014, a period that included the Super Eaglesโ€™ 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Nikeโ€™s return in 2015 produced some of Nigeriaโ€™s most recognisable kits, including the widely celebrated 2018 World Cup jersey.

Adidas has a larger retail footprint in Nigeria, with about 13 stores compared to Nikeโ€™s one, and it plans to expand to 32 stores within two years. This was another factor behind the switch.

Nigeriaโ€™s Junior Female Yellow Greens began their ICC U19 Womenโ€™s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division One campaigns, on a winning note, defeating Uganda by four wickets.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bat but struggled against Nigeriaโ€™s disciplined bowling attack, managing 59 for seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs at the TCA Cricket Arena Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Nigeriaโ€™s bowlers maintained sustained pressure throughout the innings, with Chisom Okpe returning impressive figures of two wickets for four runs in four overs.

Shadiahย  Nabulime top-scored for Uganda with 22 runs off 34 balls, while Jimia Mohamed contributed 13 runs from 25 deliveries.

Peace Usen also claimed two wickets for 12 runs to help restrict Uganda to a modest total.

Chasing 60 runs for victory, Nigeria appeared to be in control before Ugandaโ€™s Tino Sarah produced a remarkable bowling performance to bring the contest to life.

Sarah claimed five wickets for 13 runs in four overs, including two maiden overs as Nigeria lost wickets at regular intervals.

However,ย  Nigeria showed composure under pressure to complete the chase and secure victory by four wickets.

Omosigho Eguakun provided the foundation for Nigeriaโ€™s innings with a patient 24 runs off 29 balls.

Christabel Chukwuonye added an important attacking contribution, scoring 13 runs from 10 deliveries, including three boundaries.

The victory gives Nigeria a positive start to their campaign as they seek to advance through the Africa qualifiers and move closer to securing a place in the next stage.
