Tunji Disu, the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has declared that the era of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is over, warning officers that Nigerians are their ultimate bosses.
Disu made the remarks on Wednesday after he was decorated with his new rank by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
On Tuesday, Tinubu appointed Disu, formerly an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), as Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. Egbetokun stepped down citing “pressing family considerations,” according to the presidency.
Speaking after the decoration ceremony, Disu pledged zero tolerance for corruption under his leadership, stressing the importance of professionalism and respect for human rights.
“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train and encourage them to follow human rights,” he said.
He emphasized that police officers must recognize that they cannot succeed without public cooperation.
“We can never succeed without the cooperation of members of the public,” he added, noting that his administration would focus on boosting morale within the force while addressing pressing national security challenges.
Disu also acknowledged the country’s ongoing security concerns, particularly banditry and insurgency, commending officers for their hard work and dedication.
“The country is facing a particular problem — the issue of banditry and insurgency. I know all police officers have been doing their best. They are hardworking people. All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make things better,” he said.
The Acting IGP disclosed that he was deeply moved when President Tinubu highlighted his achievements during the ceremony, saying he “almost shed tears” as the president reeled out his record of service.
