President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) with immediate effect.
The appointment follows the resignation of the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down after submitting a letter citing pressing family considerations.
The development was announced on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the president accepted Egbetokun’s resignation earlier in the day and expressed appreciation for his decades of service to the nation and the Nigeria Police Force. Tinubu commended the outgoing police chief’s dedication and professionalism, particularly his efforts at strengthening the country’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Onanuga stated that the appointment of Disu was made in line with extant laws and legal guidance, citing the prevailing security challenges across the country.
“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement read.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the president is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP. His name will thereafter be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
